78th BSG MarDet OIC: LtCol M. Legere(CMC)
Colonial Marines
Before the attack of the Colonies by the Cylons, the Colonial Marine Corps (CMC) provided Marine Detachments (MarDet) on board all operational Battlestars, Gunstars, Troopships, most CDF Tenders and Cargo Ships, at various ammunition storage sites, and at major bases on the 12 Colonies. A total of over 700,000 men and women are assigned to the CMC mission.
On board ship the Marines primarily provide security for nuclear weapons, the ships Magazine, the CIC, the Engine Room/Reactor, the many ships weapons lockers, the ships CO, operate ships weapons, and also serve as the cadre for a landing/repelling force, and performing ceremonial functions.
In this role, they man sentinel posts over designated weapons spaces and provide a powerful reaction force capable of instant response to any situation. This is clearly evident if you ever have been run over by a charging Marine when the security alert (F.A.S.T. or C.A.T.) team is called away.
Led by their officers, this separate command also maintains a constant training program with typically Marine subjects as the syllabus. With all their security and other duties, these busy young men and women are a vital asset to the CDF.
The standard Marine Detachment on a Mercury Class Battlestar is 8 officers (more Officers if Raptor Elements are assigned) and 256 enlisted Marines.
